|Event Overview / Schedule / Theme|
Thank you for your ongoing support of the Specialty Coffee Association of Japan.
Specialty coffee consumption in Japan continues to grow. An Association survey conducted in 2016 found that specialty coffee accounts for more than 8% of all coffee consumed. This year's survey is currently being conducted and is expected to announce even greater growth. The size of the Specialty Coffee Association of Japan has grown alongside, with a membership including companies and individuals that has grown to over 1,700 members as of December 2017.
The Association's biggest event is being held again this year: SCAJ World Specialty Coffee Conference and Exhibition 2018 will be conducted over three days at Tokyo Big Sight from September 26 (Wednesday) to September 28 (Friday).
This year's theme is “The Sustainable Future of Coffee.” This will no doubt be a critical theme for those affiliated with producer countries, which are being impacted by climate change on a global scale. But it is also highly relevant for those affiliated with consumer countries, which have to continually improve product quality and services amid intensifying competition. The exhibition will see organizations from 23 countries, including coffee producer nations, set up roughly 250 booths designed after this theme to showcase related machines and equipment, disseminate a range of information, and conduct quality seminars, among other things. The finals for various specialty coffee competitions will also be held. The champions of these competitions in Japan have gone on to become world champions in recent years — evidence of Japan's world-leading level of competition.
We sincerely hope you will be able to take time out of your busy schedules to attend SCAJ 2018. Asia's largest specialty coffee exhibition, SCAJ 2018 will open the door to the latest information and valuable connections that will undoubtedly benefit your coffee business.
I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the consistent and wonderful support everyone has shown the Specialty Coffee Association of Japan (SCAJ).
Thanks to all of you, the SCAJ is celebrating its 15th anniversary, in commemoration of which we have made a new start as we prepare to hold our 14th exhibition this year.
Last year, a total of 126 specialty coffee companies, organizations and other groups from 25 countries and regions including coffee producing countries exhibited at 246 booths at SCAJ 2017.
In addition, a record-surpassing total of 29,801 people from 28 countries and regions visited the exhibition during the three-day event. This is also a demonstration of the value that people from both Japan and the rest of the world attach to this event, which is the largest dedicated to specialty coffee in Asia.
In celebration of our 15th year, we have significantly increased the venue area for World Specialty Coffee Conference & Exhibition 2018. Tokyo Big Sight’s 4,680 m² West Hall 3 and 6,840 m² West Hall 4 will provide a total floor area of 11,520 m² or approximately 1.6 times that of last year’s conference. World Specialty Coffee Conference & Exhibition 2018 will be the biggest event that SCAJ has ever held.
The enlarged venue will provide room for a variety of new projects as well as competitions, which previously had to be held outside the exhibition hall. These competitions will significantly add to the exhibition’s energy and enthusiasm. In addition, this year, space will be set up for business discussions and negotiations, which had to be conducted outside the venue last year due to floor area constraints. I believe that this new area will help all participants further advance their businesses.
Information about the rapidly-advancing specialty coffee industry will be available at SCAJ 2018 before anywhere else.
We hope that you will be able to personally experience the innovative progress that everything associated with specialty coffee continues to demonstrate and have a chance to see firsthand the excellence of specialty coffee, an enticing beverage that amazes and inspires people around the world as it continues to become an integral part of our modern lifestyle.
